Our newest pattern, the Passing Through Sweater, is a bit of a departure from my contemporary design language—and that’s exactly what I love about it. The color and scale bring the traditional motif into the current.

Made in collaboration with The Wandering Flock using their ultra-soft DK weight yarn, this design was a chance to explore a quieter, more traditional kind of colorwork. I knit the sample in Alexandrite and Celery, two shades that together create something unexpected: the brightness of Alexandrite is mellowed by the soft, springy tone of Celery, creating a garment that feels both bold and easy to wear.

I tend to be drawn to strong geometric patterns—motifs that flip and mirror and build like bricks, like in the Eyes Sweater or the Hole Sweater. But this time, I wanted to revisit something familiar in a different way. The original spark came from a pair of traditional mittens I saw that used groupings of three vertical lines. There was something so grounding about that motif, but I wanted to remix it—add a twist that felt more like me.

The final design combines stranded knitting, knit and purl texture, and slip stitches to create a pattern that feels like it’s in motion. It has that satisfying rhythm I love, but also a softness and simplicity that nods to the past.

Passing Through feels like a meeting point—between old and new, structure and softness, DEGEN and tradition. I hope you love knitting it as much as I loved designing it.
The Passing Through Sweater pattern drops on August 7th.
